The Best Hotel in Greece
Greece has long been a favourite destination for British holiday makers. The islands of Crete, Corfu and Rhodes have proved particularly popular, with a large scale British invasion each summer. One of the benefits of going to one of these resorts is that they promise great weather, nice beaches, and plenty of bars and restaurants – and all at a great price. However, there’s much more to Greece than sea, sand and cold beers. It’s a country rich with history, and it boasts some of the greatest classical and archaeological sites in the world. A trip to Athens is perfect if you want a city break that contrasts modernity with antiquity. Recently one of the hotels in the city appeared in Travelandleisure.com’s top 500 hotels in the world. If you want to travel to Athens in style then you should have a look at the Grande Bretagne hotel – one of the very best in Greece.
Brief History
Having opened in 1874, the Grand Bretagne claims to being more than just one of the most luxurious establishments in Greece, as it is a point of reference in the social, political and economic life of Athens. The hotel was apparently instrumental in the creation of a strong bourgeois mentality in the backward fin de siècle Greece, and since then it has become the venue of the Greek capital’s most important social gatherings, with many important people becoming regular patrons. This rich history is a major factor in the grandness of the building, which is splendidly furnished within.
The Hotel Today
The 321 rooms of the Grande Bretagne are decked with restored antiques and fabrics that personalise the space. All rooms feature cable television, voice mail, high-speed internet, minibar and wood-paneled wordrobes with in-room safes, as well as the latest high tech facilities. Classic double at the Grande Bretagne rooms will set you back a quite reasonable 255 Euros over the festive period, while the deluxe suite is as much as 480 Euros. The most luxurious of the hotel’s rooms is the one Royal Suite, a four hundred square metre room of elegance furnished with antiques and original artwork. The room also includes a private wine cellar and beautiful views across the city.
Dining and Drinking
As well as the classic grandeur of the rooms, the Grande Bretagne houses one of the finest dining experiences in Athens and one of the top hotel bars in the world. The GB Corner is the most famous brasserie in Athens, whilst the stunning GB Roof Garden Bar-Restaurant offers an unparalleled dining experience in the city. While the menu follows the Italian roots of head chef Emilio Bracciale, it has some stunning views over Athens, particularly with the sun setting behind the Acropolis. Following the trend of being amongst the city’s best, the Alexander’s Bar was voted the best hotel bar in the world for 2004 by Forbes.com; with the focal point being a stunning 18th century tapestry of Alexander the Great it’s not difficult to see why.
